Know the Difference
Narex Scratch Awl (101-743) Narex Birdcage Awl (101-744)
A Narex premium scratch awl is the ideal way to accurately scribe lines into wood for your joinery projects. The round shape of the cutting edge allows this tool to part wood fibers easily and cleanly, and the ergonomic design allows it to be held in a variety of positions so you can place your lines exactly where they need to be. Dovetails, mortise and tenons, even veneer and marquetry patterns can be marked out with this well-made tool. A Narex birdcage awl allows you to cut pilot holes and countersink existing drill points precisely and efficiently. Made from high quality chrome-manganese alloyed steel and sharpened to a square point on both the primary and secondary cutting bezels, these birdcage awls allow for true wood cutting that their scratch awl cousins weren't designed to do.

Features Include:

  • Chrome-Manganese alloyed steel blade with black surface treatment
  • Stained and varnished beech wood handle
  • Part of the Narex Wood Line series of premium hand tools

Uses in your shop:

  • A Scratch Awl (101-743) is the best used when scribing lines in your working material
  • A Birdcage Awl (101-744) is most effective at creating small holes in wood

Violet T. ★★★★★

The varnished beech wood handle on the birdcage awl gives me a solid, comfortable grip even after hours of marking dovetails, and the point came sharp enough to start work immediately.

James Y. ★★★★★

The stained beech wood handles on these awls have a nice weight to them, making precise marking much easier than with my old generic ones. I was surprised by how comfortable the varnished grip feels during longer sessions.

Olivia ★★★★★

The scratch awl's tip was sharp enough to start pilot holes cleanly in hard maple without any slip. The birdcage awl's tapered shape makes it perfect for precise marking, and the varnished handle gives a nice grip.
