Towards the late 17th century, Great Britain was a growing world power and trading nation. This led to an economic boom and there were more people in Britain that could afford opulent homes and furniture. The notable makers of the time, such as Garret Johnson and Grinling Gibbons, sacrificed strength for style, incorporating curved classical rounded shapes into the moldings of furniture. These profiles evolved from the classical Greek and Roman shapes as used by famous architects and designers Christopher Wren (designer of St. Paul's Cathedral in London) and William Kent to name a few.

Used this bit for some reproduction crown molding and the profile matches the 17th century style perfectly. The 1/2 inch shank kept it stable even on deep passes through hard maple.

I’ve been running this through some red oak and the thumbnail profile comes out perfectly crisp, no tear-out even on the end grain. The 1/2" shank feels rock solid in the collet, and it’s become my go-to for that historical molding look.

The 17th-century-inspired profile adds a lovely period touch—it’s sharp and clean right out of the box, no wobble on my table. Took a test pass on some oak and the thumbnail shape came out exactly like the old joinery I was aiming for.
