I was skeptical about sharpening without removing the blades, but the diamond surface on this hone took out the nicks in my planer knives after just a few passes. It's surprisingly easy to control with the handle, and the edge is noticeably smoother now when I plane walnut and maple.

The solid wood handle gives you real grip, no slipping even when the blades are slightly oily. I ran it along the jointer knives while they were still mounted and the edge came back surprisingly sharp, took maybe ten minutes total. This is one of those tools that just makes sense to have in the shop
